Celestial Soundbites ~ Sun in Capricorn

If Sagittarius is boisterous and bold, Capricorn is reserved and contained.  It grounds and stabilizes the big ideas and expansion of its predecessor.  Sober and serious, Capricorns can feel like the kills-joys of the zodiac, especially after all the jolly, jubilant, joviality of Sagittarius.

Capricorns are naturally cautious, and can tend to be a bit conservative and withheld. One thing is for sure, Capricorns come in with a hefty sense of responsibility. In it’s shadow, this can express itself as a burdened/enduring character strategy – long suffering, heavy, deprived and self-sacrificing.

In our pleasure-seeking, fun-loving, instant-gratification culture, it could be easy to miss what is elevated about this archetype, but there is a lot of value here. Capricorn gifts include maturity, integrity, mastery and discipline. Capricorns can also be irreverent, ironic and hilariously funny, equipped with a wry wit and a sharp tongue.

I’ve been deeply contemplating what Capricorn (guardian of the sacred cross-quarterly threshold of the Winter Solstice) has to do with the return of the Light.  And it occurred to me that what we are truly responsible for is the care and tending of our own Inner Light, and for restoring the Light to our world. This is the real sacred imperative of the Goat.

It’s so easy to take on responsibilities thoughtlessly, to become mired by our commitments, and end up feeling crushed by the weight of our world.  But if we could feel into the deeper nature of our obligation, we’d find that it’s the cultivation, maintenance and sharing of our Inner Light with the world that matters most.  It’s through this process that we illuminate and restore the world during this darkest time of year.

So this month, in holy, devotional feeding of the Capricorn energy, I invite you to recommit to your Light. Do it knowing that there are a million ways to access and attend to your Light, and that the sheer willingness to engage in this process is monumental.

And if you want help getting clear about ways that you can nurture your unique spark, reach out to me for a session and we’ll come up with some ideas together.

May the Grace within you shine through you forever more. Sat Nam.

Celestial Soundbites ~ Sun in Sagittarius

On November 22nd the Sun entered Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a BIG energy, and a dynamic one. It’s a mutable fire sign and speaks to themes of higher education, world-wisdom, foreign travel, diversity, faith, values and existential considerations. It also deals with themes of political extremism, religious intolerance, dogma, oppression, and self-righteousness.

The guru and the sage originate from the same raw archetypal energy as the dictator and the fanatic. One is expressing a higher iteration of the energy, the other a distortion, but the underlying energy is the same. The distance between the pulpit and the soapbox can be a mighty small one.

This month, in devotional feeding of the Sagittarian energy, I invite you to free your mind!

  • Consider a different perspective
  • Challenge your thoughts and assumptions
  • Re-examine what you’ve been told
  • Question everything
  • Go beyond your conditioned mind
  • Let go of what you think you know
  • Leave no thought unturned

When you change your mind, you change your life. That’s why Sagittarius is richly associated with themes of travel, contemplation and vision questing – activities and practices that help dissolve rigid beliefs and biases, and make space for deeper Truths to emerge.

How will you honor this dynamic energy this month?

Will you be a sagacious sage or a dogmatic dictator?

Will your beliefs support your liberation, or will they function as inner-oppressors and petty-tyrants?

Will you welcome expansive thinking and infinite possibilities, or will you limit your experience and diminish other people’s lifestyle choices, political beliefs and ways of worshipping?

Sagittarius loves to inspire you! Here are some related quotes to do just that.

“Life is filled with illusion pretending to be truth.” ~Annie Kagan
“Knock all the gurus off your alter and replace them with a picture of you.” ~Jeff Brown
“The mind that perceives the limitation is the limitation.” ~Buddha
“There are so many small-minded people out there, don’t be one of them.” ~Source unknown

Celestial Soundbites ~ Sun in Scorpio

This is the first blog in a new series called Celestial Soundbites. Each month I’ll be offering some suggestions, contemplations and practices to help you explore, examine and align with the sun sign of the month. You can read these on my website, or you can sign up for my mailing list and get them delivered to your inbox for FREE.

This month, in honor of Scorpio, I invite you to contemplate nothing less than your own mortality.

That’s too bleak, too morose, too dark you protest!

But think about it…

What else would be possible for your life if you lived each day with the knowledge that you were going to die?

Let. That. Sink. In.

And let’s take it one step further…

What would be possible if you lived each day with the knowledge that your death could happen at any moment, and that you have no real control of the timing or circumstances?

What risks would you take?
What passions would you pursue?
What pleasures would you surrender to?
What pettinesses would you let go of?

Scorpio asks us to go deep, to live at our edge, to get real about death and sex and those hidden corners of our psyches we’d rather not look at. But Scorpio also rewards us for going into those places by letting us know that we are truly alive!

So this month I invite you to access the gifts that come with the knowledge of your own impermanence. May you excavate nothing less than soul gold.
